THE WATER CYCLE: THE PERMEABLE PAVINGS 

Permeability is the physical property which represents the capacity of a body to be crossed by a fluid. This definition can also be applicated to interlocking pavings with regards to rainwater. Thus the draining pavings are those which permit a rainwater drain towards the deepest layers of soil.  

DRAINING PAVING: Interlocking pavings in concrete studied for favouring the drain of meteoric precipitations and the water filtration in the underground through the joints filled with permeable material (sand or gravel). 

FILTERING PAVING: Interlocking pavings in concrete studied for favouring the drain of meteoric precipitations and the water filtration in the underground. 

ADVANTAGES:  

  • Substantial decrease of surface water. 
  • The natural water cycle can be maintained almost unchanged or re-established.   
  • The draining/filtering pavings are, as proved by several foreign studies, a very effective means for removing pollutants from surface washout. 
  • The draining/filtering pavings in concrete represent a sustainable management system of rainwater, by allowing the realization of pavings suitable to vehicular and pedestrian traffic, in compliance with the water protection measures, by combining project requirements and regulatory requirements. 
  • Aesthetic valency, given by colours and by different laying methods. 

RECOMMENDED USE:  

  • In areas with residential expansion, where the reconstruction of the sewers for white water isn’t economically possible.   
  • In areas where a maximum limit of rainwater discharge, flown in the public collection network.    

In quantitative terms, the reduction of peaks of the inflow coefficient during meteorological phenomena is equal to the reduction obtained in uncovered green areas.  

Volumes and washout decrease of approx. 80% compared to other pavings, like asphalt, and phenomena like aquaplaning are avoided

NOT RECOMMENDED USE:   

  • Where there is excessive deposit on the surface (courtyards of worksites or constructions companies and neighbouring).   
  • In areas adjacent to steeper ones, which are deposit source. 
  • In service stations, in truck stop areas, places of chemical industries, and generally all the areas where dangerous materials are moved and might disperse in the environment or where spills of concentrated quantities of pollutants might happen. 
  • In sites where the aquifer remains seasonally very high and thus can saturate the soil close to the surface and inside the paving section.
